Aloe Vera

Aloe vera (syn. A. barbadensis, A. vulgaris) is an evergreen succulent perennial plant belonging to the Aloeaceae family. The species name 'vera' means real or true. Aloe vera is mainly kept as a house plant in the British Isles but in hotter climates it is grown outside. For further information on this really useful plant see our information booklet below.

  2. There are many species of Aloe, they are not all edible and they can be difficult to identify. To be on the safe side, we would recommend starting from scratch and purchasing an organic Aloe vera plant from a reliable source.

  9. Yes, the clear gel is edible as is the whole leaf. The clear gel is very palatable but the layer between that and the outer skin of the leaf is very bitter.

  10. One hour ago I ate a very tasty section of aloe root, with only a slightly bitter aftertaste. The question is: Will I still be on the planet twenty-four hours hence?

    1. Why ask the question after you ate it? lol. Go online and find out first.... apparently there are some serious 'silent' risks associated with eating it; you should take time to look this up yourself.

  16. All Aloe Vera plant leaves we bought from neighbouring farmer were edible only because he was there for ages and families all around bought couple of leaves about a metre long from this farmer and used. I also wish to know how to identify the edible ones outside that farm house in my village. We could use its pulp to make a soupy vegetable by adding some potatoes. The only thing was that we soaked the pulp bits in salt for half an hour to get rid of the gluey stuff. You can pickle the leaf by chopping it in slices along with the green skin and bung these pieces in a jar with 20% cooking salt and bit of 'Ajwain' - aniseed. The pickle will shed some juice and the salt will remove its bitterness and gluey nature. Leaves will brownish on the outside in 30 days. Pickle is ready to eat as is. I miss that taste.

    1. We've no idea if any of the other species are suitable for use on the skin or of the worst effects of imbibing any of them. It may just be an upset stomach but it's not worth the risk.

Use barbadenis Mill then you can';t go wrong, I have 50 plants in my greenhouse, and give them away with a leaflet giving lots of tips. Everything you need to know is on the internet. Eat it, wash with it, stop the dog from scratching, it just goes on and on. Get your plant, you'll love it, and it will love you back.

To see the difference in your skin you will need to apply the gel regularly on the face for a couple of weeks. Once you see the difference you can also make Aloe Vera a part of you every day skin care routine or a weekly routine.
